Laparoscopy is surgical technique that uses a thin, lighted tube called a laparoscope to let gynecologists examine pelvic and abdomen areas internally and operate, if necessary, as outpatient surgery. Laparoscopy is used to find problems such as ovarian cysts, adhesions, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, tumors, pelvic inflammatory disease, appendicitis, cholecystitis and infection. Tissue samples can be taken for biopsy through the laparoscopic tube.
